Following the highly anticipated announcement of Vision Pro at WWDC, Apple is now delving deeper into the intricacies of the headset and the visionOS software platform in a series of enlightening developer sessions. One particular session titled “Design for spatial input” sheds light on two distinct ways users can interact with Vision Pro: a floating in-air keyboard and the option to pair an external keyboard via Bluetooth.

One of the most frequently asked questions about Vision Pro has revolved around text input. During the WWDC developer session, Apple provided valuable insights into two methods that allow users to effortlessly input text using Vision Pro.

The first method involves utilizing a virtual keyboard that responds to touch input from your fingertips. Apple has meticulously designed the virtual keyboard to guide users towards the button surface. The buttons themselves are subtly raised above the platter, creating an inviting surface that encourages direct interaction. As your finger hovers above the keyboard, the buttons display a hover state and a highlight that progressively brightens as you approach the button surface. This visual cue serves as a proximity indicator, assisting in guiding your finger precisely to the desired button.

When contact is made with a button, the response is immediate and highly responsive. Simultaneously, a matching spatial sound effect accompanies the state change, providing additional feedback to compensate for the absence of tactile information. These carefully crafted layers of feedback are paramount in ensuring a seamless typing experience, making direct interactions feel reliable and satisfying.

While the virtual keyboard offers an innovative solution, Apple recognizes that holding your hands in the air for extended periods may lead to fatigue. To address this concern, Vision Pro provides the option to pair an external keyboard with the headset using Bluetooth. This feature allows users to leverage the comfort and familiarity of a physical keyboard while interacting with Vision Pro. With an external keyboard connected, users can effortlessly control and dictate text using their voice, further enhancing the versatility and convenience of Vision Pro.

This approach not only enhances the overall typing experience but also takes into account the importance of ergonomics and user well-being.

With Vision Pro and the visionOS software platform, Apple is revolutionizing the way we interact with augmented reality and immersive experiences. The seamless text input capabilities showcased during the WWDC session demonstrate Apple’s dedication to empowering users with intuitive and adaptable technologies. As Vision Pro evolves, we can expect further refinements and innovations that will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of spatial computing and user interaction.
