Facebook Chat Heads and Chat Stickers came to the iPhone today, with the newest update to the iPhone Facebook app. Facebook Chat Heads were first launched with the new “Facebook Home“, and its Facebook “Cover Feed“, which was rolled out on the Android platform. While the newly updated Facebook app for the iPhone doesn’t go as far as to offer a cover feed (and we’re not sure that’s necessarily a bad thing), it does give you the Chat Heads, and also Facebook Chat “stickers” (think emoji on steroids), which you can get from the Facebook “sticker store”.
After installing the Facebook app update, the next time you go to your list of chats, when you select one, it will put a little round icon, representing the chat (the so-called Chat Head) on your screen. You can ‘open’ more than one Chat Head, and by selecting (tapping on) the Chat Head for the chat you want, it will open up that chat.
Tap on the Chat Head again, and it will close the chat, and also collapse all of the Chat Heads into one spot. That spot will persist and follow you around in the app, so that wherever you are in the Facebook app, your stack of Chat Heads will be there with you.
The Internet Patrol is completely free, and reader-supported. Your tips via CashApp, Venmo, or Paypal are appreciated! Receipts will come from ISIPP.
To remove one of the Chat Heads, long-press it, and start dragging it down the screen, and a circle with an ‘X’ in it will appear. Drop the Chat Head onto that X and it will be removed from your Chat Heads (you can always get it back by going back to that chat inside the regular chat menu).
The other new feature is the Facebook chat “stickers”. These are insipid images that you can insert into your messages to clutter up your chats and annoy your friends. You get your stickers from the Facebook “sticker store”, although at present they all seem to be free, so ‘store’ is either a misnomer, or a portent of things to come.
Of course, given that you can also use the Facebook Messenger app as a stand-alone interface for your Facebook chats, we’re not really sure how useful the Chat Heads will be in the iPhone Facebook app, but they do give you options. And a comeback for when your Android friends flaunt their Facebook home.
