Gary Brolsma obviously didn’t read our cautionary tale about the teenager whose home movie of himself having sex with his girlfriend up on the Internet.

Or, maybe he did.

But what Gary Brolsma recorded himself doing has piqued the interest of people more than if he was having sex. Even more than people’s interest in the contents of Paris Hilton’s hacked Sidekick account!

You see, Gary Brolsma recorded himself doing the Numa Numa Dance.

“The what?” you ask, not sure that you heard right.

The Numa Numa Dance.

More specifically, Gary Brolsma videoed himself chair-dancing while lip-syncing to the Romanian pop hit (who knew?) “Dragostea Din Tei”.

Now, let’s be real. This is a grainy homemade video, made on a webcam, of a 20-something geek sitting in a chair and bopping out to a Romanian bubble-gum song to which he lip syncs.

How much appeal do you think it has?

Well, if you go by the viewdometer, a lot. Millions of people have viewed the home movie, and Brolsma and his Numa Numa dance are just on the beginning of the groundswell by all accounts. In fact, he’s stopped taking press calls, so numerous were they, declining even a call from the New York Times. Else his 15 minutes of Internet fame would surely have become 15 days, or maybe even 15 weeks.

Nobody seems able to explain the appeal of Brolsma’s Numa Numa dance, not even Brolsma himself

Until now.

Having viewed it herself, I believe she knows the secret to the appeal.

First, the tune is, you have to admit, catchy. Boppy. Bouncy, even.

Second, the video of Brolsma is interspersed with other pictures flashed on the screen, in time with the beat of the music. Catchy pictures, seeming to have little to do with anything, leastwise the song, which is a Romanian love song.
Some of you may see where this is going…yes…the reason for the Numa Numa dance’s popularity is because it harkens back to that other extremely popular underground video with bouncy rythmic music and a collage of seemingly unrelated pictures which nonetheless seem to tell a story: All Your Base Are Belong to Us.

But don’t take my word for it, see it for yourself here, where Newsground.com is hosting the Numa Numa Dance here.

  2. The video is so attractive because it’s spontaneous! He does it like he’s not intending to be recorded. Another reason is that people love to see others making a jerk of themselves. Why do programs like Big Brother got so many viewers? The same reason. And please see the original stuff: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/numa.php
    not the one tampered with.

  5. Im suprised your blog is so high on the hit list for a google of the “numa numa dance”. Your rhetoric is so far off base, its incomprehensible. It has nothing to do with interlaced pictures of wierdness. Infact, the most popular versions, are with the pictures removed. It has to do with the fact, that everyone loves a catchy tune. It has to do with the fact taht everyone loves a happy fat kid. Combine the two, and you got internet gold. plain and simple. Go Gary, you got it all figured out

  6. The “Numa Numa Dance” is one of the cutest items I’ve seen on the Internet in a long time! Here we have a kid singing a sweet love song, putting his all into it, (that thing he did with his eyebrow just blew me away!) and unbeknownst to him, 1,000,000 people have been completely entertained without gutter rhetoric, lewd body parts, erotic action, etc…
I say that somehow we all let him know how much joy his few minutes of intrusion into his personality has given us.

  7. Our family watches the Numa dance almost daily and the kids have the tune and his moves all figured out. Why is it so fun to watch? Simple guys, we all have pretended to be rock stars in front of a mirror, we are all Gary (just not crazy enough to record it).

  8. I personally LOVED it! We need a little laughter in our lives and I really got a kick out of it. Give the kid some slack, man.

  13. I agree completely with one of the comments above. I was completely surprised to find this blog so high up on a google of the numa numa dance. Everyone I know finds the version of to video with interlaced pictures to be stupid and irrelevant. However, we all find the original to be very funny. It’s a shame it had to be ruined with the “picture version.” In addition, lets remember that even though his video IS getting a ton of hits, it’s the version without the pictures
added… Your reasoning as to why to the video is popular is so wrong, it’s not even funny…
