LocateCell.com and other Internet sites which were known to be selling consumers’ private cell phone records have been either taken off line by action by the Federal Trade Commission, or have taken themselves offline after seeing the handwriting on the wall.

Last summer the Internet Patrol reported the ease with which one could obtain the cell phone records of others by using such services as LocateCell.com, or a private investigator.

More recently, T-Mobile sued LocateCell.com and other cellular data brokers, and most recently the FTC conducted a sweep of sites selling private data, shutting down some sites, and warning others.

Explained Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, Lydia Parnes, “The agency has sent letters to about 20 other sites, warning them that they may be violating the law and should review their business practices.”

Explained LocateCell.com’s website this week, “PLEASE BE ADVISED We are no longer accepting new orders. All finished orders will be returned by 5:00 PM, 02/05/06. If by that time you have not recieved (sic) results, your order will not be processed, and any authorization(s) pending on your card will not be charged - they will simply “fall off” within the next few days. Thank You for your patronage, It was a pleasure serving you.”

Hurrah.
