Say goodbye to our little friend, the unlimited 3G data plan for the iPad 3G + Wifi. Yes, it’s true, less than a month after rolling it out, AT&T has announced that they will be replacing the unlimited 3G data plan for iPad with a new, limited 3G data plan, known as the AT&T DataPro plan, effective Monday, June 7th. And the current $15.00 for 250MB per month plan has been reduced to 200MB per month under the new AT&T DataPlus plan. This means that if you are thinking of buying an iPad 3G, now is the time to do it, so that you can sign up for the unlimited data plan by Sunday.

According to the AT&T announcement today, the new data plan will be capped at 2GB, for $25, after which you can by additional 1GB chunks for $10 per Gigabyte. There will also be a lower-end data plan for the iPad 3G, which includes 200 megabytes of data for $15.00 per month, with additional 200MB blocks of data for $15.00. The additional blocks of data for each plan automatically kick in if you exceed that for which you are already paying. The 2GB per month plan is known as the Data Pro plan, and the 200MB per month plan is known as the Data Plus plan.
Both plans also apply to the iPhone which, under the new plans, will finally get tethering. Tethering the iPhone requires a special additional plan enhancement, which costs $20.00 per month, and requires either the new AT&T DataPro or DataPlus plan.
Says AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T’s Mobility and Consumer Markets division, “To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we’re breaking free from the traditional one-size-fits-all pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people.”

The good news is that people who activate the unlimited data plan for $29.95 per month prior to Monday, June 7th, are grandfathered in.
