Is Facebook Down? Facebook is Down for Many Right Now

If you are trying to reach Facebook today, and finding Facebook gone, it may be that Facebook is down. Or it may be that part of their Internet backbone is not routing traffic to them. As we write this, it seems to be a bit of both: Facebook is down for us, because part of their Internet infrastructure is hosed. Here’s a detailed explanation of how your computer gets to the Facebook website and, at the end, a work-around if you are currently unable to reach Facebook.

This is a traceroute – it shows the routing from our computer to Facebook – or, at least, the attempted routing:

Each one of these lines is called a “hop” – when you connect, or try to connect, to a website, your connection from your computer to that website hops from one link to another along the way, like stepping stones across a stream.

In this case, you can see that our attempted trip to Facebook.com started at myvzw.com (because we are on the Verizon network, which is what myvzw.com is), and then hoed over to alter.net (a major Internet backbone provider) and then on to Level3, another major internet backbone provider.

At one point, we were passed from general Level3 servers over to Facebook’s own Level3 servers (as signified by the subdomains facebook-in.edge2 and facebook-in.edge3.

Then we were handed off to tfbnw.net, and that is where the problem seems to begin. Do you see those entries that are nothing but asterisks (stars)? Like this?:

Those usually (not always, but usually) signify a timeout, meaning that the next hop has failed to respond. This is why when trying to reach Facebook right now, your browser may just hang, and never get there.

Now, it will not always be the case that if you run into this problem you will not be able to get to your intended destination on the web, because it could be that the hop that is hanging up and timing out may be one of many hops that are not related to your intended destination, but are merely mid-way points.

However, in this case, tfbnw.net is actually under Facebook’s control, and so the odds are more likely that, unless your request to go to Facebook.com is routed through another of Facebook’s own real estate, that you will have a problem trying to get to Facebook. Here is a “whois” lookup for tfbnw.net, showing that it either belongs to Facebook or, at least, is under Facebook’s control:

  1. can it be that our prayers have been answered? could we be so lucky that “FarceBook” could be gone? Or has steve j. reached out from that binary cloud in the sky? Mark should be locked in a 4X8 windowless cell with only a 12 inch black and white and a original “Pong” console!

  2. ahhhh, not to be rude to you–but who the heck cares? fb is going the way of netflix in my house if they dont quit screwing around. new changes stink, i am old but even my kids cant get the hang of whats going on.

  3. hmm, my son’s facebook account in new england is up and accessible at 0143 hours.
