As we discussed earlier, Consumer Reports has issued a “can’t recommend” warning for the iPhone 4, based on the reception problems.
However, in the process of testing the iPhone 4.0 issues, they did find a quick, cheap fix for the problem. It’s not pretty, but apparently it does work.
Consumer Reports explains that they found “an affordable solution for suffering iPhone 4 users: Cover the antenna gap with a piece of duct tape or another thick, non-conductive material. It may not be pretty, but it works”
They also go on to say that they would expect that using a case would fix the problem as well, although they have not yet tested that.
Of course, you shouldn’t have to do this – your phone – particularly one for which you paid so much money – should, in an ironic homage to the phrase oft-applied to Apple products, just work.

Says Consumer Reports, “If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3G S.”
