[Ed. note: If you must have free email, we strongly recommend switching from Hotmail to another free email service provider such as Yahoo, AOL, or Gmail. We personally recommend either Yahoo or AOL, as they are not only reliable, but they are the top two in ensuring that email you want gets through to you, while still being very good about trying to keep spam out of your inbox. By contrast, many businesses simply refuse to send email to people with Hotmail accounts, because they are notoriusly difficult to deal with, even when their servers are up.]

Even international users, from as far away as Belize, and from South America, reported being unable to access Hotmail.

Reports poured in to the Internet Patrol starting at about 07:45 PST, with reports of the Hotmail service finally coming back up again more than three hours later.

No word from Microsoft / Hotmail / Windows Live / whatever their name d’jour is, but judging by reports to the Internet Patrol, this is the third time in as many months that the giant free webmail service has gone down.

Many, tired of the erratic service, are switching, which may be just fine with Microsoft, given yesterday’s announcement that they are moving their focus to advertising and devices. Of course, they neglected to mention that they are moving their focus to advertising on your personal hard drive!

“I have switched over to Gmail, and I recommend everyone to do that as well. It’s actually a lot better than Hotmail, now I just wish I did it sooner. Hotmail is horrible period, as soon as I moved all my accounts, goodbye Hotmail forever!” says one victim of the June outage.

Said another user, of today’s outage, “No point really in including my email address (hotmail) in this comment as I can’t access it. Whom can we contact at Microsoft to request information about the server, especially an estimate of when it might be available again, and what the plans are for backup servers to prevent future outages. Also, has anyone experienced a server problem with gmail or yahoo?. I think we need to vote with our e-feet.”

So, what about you? Will you be making a switch? Have you already? Any regrets?

  1. i abandoned my hotmail account years ago, about the time i realised i was spending more time emptying the junk mail rubbish bin than reading actual wanted e-mail.

  2. You can count on Microsoft…

Just wait ’til they talk everyone into using web-based office applications and the servers go down, shutting down businesses at the same time.
    MS will own you.

But then again, folks that use Hotmail are getting just what they pay for.

  3. My Hotmail account is a secondary one so it’s no big deal for me. My ISP POP account is my main which I have forward to Gmail as their spam filtering is better.
