This is the continuation of a previous post. You can find it here.

We’re talking iPhone notification settings, how-to’s, and tips for making your iPhone work for you, instead of the other way around.

Last time we covered the iPhone tips such as auto-answering phone calls, visual LED flash notifications, and the sneaky silent switch. In this article we are going to go over more notification settings for iPhone users. Let’s look at how to change your ringtone and other iPhone software alert tones.

We’ll start with the basics — changing your general ringtone and alert tones on your iPhone. You’ll first want to find the Settings app. If you’re not sure where an app is, remember that you can scroll all the way to the right (past your home screen) and search for it in the search bar up top. Or you can give your screen a quick flick of the finger in a downward motion from any of your iPhone screens in order to pull down the search menu.
In Settings, go to Sounds and Haptics, which is underneath Notifications for updated iPhone users. You should see “Ringtone” followed by “Text Tone” and a bunch of other alert types that are built in to your iPhone’s software such as Mail and Calendar. You can click on any of these notification types which will bring you to the page where all the tones are listed. Caution! If you click on one of the ringtones/alert tones, it will play you a sample of that tone so you can see if you like it or not before making your selection. So you may want to adjust your volume or wait until you’re at home to move on.
Once you have found a tone that suits you and selected it, there should be a check mark next to it. That’s how you know which tone you have currently selected. Note that the tones labeled under “Alert Tones” will be shorter, more noise-like (“Ping!”) than those under “Ringtones” which are more often melodic or repetitive (“baDoom Ching!”) You can choose ringtones for alerts or alert tones as your ringtone, it’s totally up to you!
This page is also where you can adjust the vibration that each notification type delivers when you’re in silent mode. You can either select from the stock vibration patterns or tap your own! And just so you know, the standard vibration pattern is synchronized to your tone.

I hope you enjoyed this segment of the series How To Make You iPhone Work For You. Next time we’re going to cover the customization of individual contact’s notifications. Check back for more iPhone-using tricks!
