For those of you who are thinking “Hrmm…Sunday is April 1st – Google Self-Driving Car, April 1 – uh huh”, well, it’s no joke. No fooling. In fact, we saw the Google self-driving car ourselves this week; it drove right past us!
Google’s self-driving car was road-tested this week by Steve Mahan, the CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center.
“We organized this test as a technical experiment outside of our core research efforts, but we think it’s also a promising look at what this kind of technology may one day deliver for society if rigorous technical and safety standards can be met,” said a Google statement.
How does it work? According to Google, “Our automated cars use video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic, as well as detailed maps (which we collect using manually driven vehicles) to navigate the road ahead. This is all made possible by Google’s data centers, which can process the enormous amounts of information gathered by our cars when mapping their terrain.”
Here’s a video of the ground-breaking trip. Holy Jetsons, Batman!
