A new study conducted by the unlikely pair of Cosmo Girl and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy has found that teens are “going sex crazy in cyber space.” Teens and cyber sex are, apparently, a natural combination. So, why not encourage it as an alternative to in-person sex, which is so much riskier?

According to Bill Albert, chief program officer at the National Campaign, “the numbers are quite sobering.” The study found that as many as 20% of teens are sending racy and even nude pictures of themselves to their boyfriends and girlfriends.

The study found that some of the teens engaging in this behaviour see it as a form of “cyber-courtship.”

Albert’s conclusion was that this is concerning, but perhaps they are missing the mark.

At a time when teen sex can lead to far worse consequences than even teen pregnancy - which in itself is bad enough - and when “Just say ‘No’ to sex” is hardly working, perhaps rather than trying to fight the trend, teens should be encouraged to consider cybersex as the safe alternative to real sex.
