The Russian dating scam has hit Match.com. Match.com is certainly not the only online dating site to be hit by the Russian dating scam, nor are dating scams limited to Russia or Russian women, but they certainly seem to be the front-runners.
Here’s how it works: a beautiful Russian woman, complete with beautiful Russian woman pictures, contacts her target through an online dating site. She starts a charming, and rapidly deepening correspondence, gets her target hooked, and then it comes: the request for money. There are variations on what the money is for, but usually it’s for a plane ticket.
In one such example, recently reported by the Register, a man using the Match.com account name of “HotLips” recounts his experience with a Russian dating scamstress, explaining that “After some correspondence, ‘she’, confessed that ‘she’ actually lived in Omsk, Russia. This was all accompanied by some very nice pictures of someone. Anyway, the sordid story continues and ‘she’ decides she loves me so much that ‘she’ wants to come and see me but, alas, ‘she’ can’t afford the airfare. However, ‘she’ knows a really cheap travel agent that will cut a great deal if we book right now (‘Her’ birthday’s coming up – did I mention that?)”
Presumably the reason for the liberal use of single quotes around the word “she” in HotLips’ account is because, of course, the odds are as good as not that the person behind the scam may be of the Y-chromosome variety, and not a woman at all. Hey, it doesn’t really matter, because they have no intention of ever meeting you in person anyways.

It turns out that there are entire websites devoted to exposing these Russian dating scams, and Russian dating scammers, some run by sites which also offer (apparently) legitimate Russian bride agency services. One such site, WomenRussia.com, has over 400 pages of warning stories posted by people just like HotLips, who were either duped, or would have been but for their quick thinking, by these Russian dating scam artists.
