Gmail appears to be down, world-wide, for many users. We are not clear as to what the specific issues are at this point in time, but it does appear that this outage is affecting thousands, if not millions, of Gmail users. Users who are affected are receiving the same error, “Temporary Error (500) We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes.” First reports of outages began appearing at approximately 11:30EST.
The Twitter-sphere is buzzing, with hundreds of frustrated Gmail users reporting their outages:

While Gmail has only been down for a little over an hour as of this writing, scorned Gmail users are already fuming that their work days are interrupted and productivity is dipping. We will continue to update everyone on the situation as we learn more.

As of 10:43am PST, Gmail was restored to full function in our offices.

Google has posted an update to the Gmail situation: “Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”

Google has posted another update, still no explanation as to what the issue was:
“The problem with Google Mail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”
