In the latest in a rash of incidents in which the personal data of customers of various institutions has been compromised, Citigroup has revealed that the personal account information of 3.9 million customers has gone missing.

3.9 million customers.

Wow.

In one fell swoop, the number of people in the United States whose personal data has been compromised has doubled.

The compromised data is that of customers of Citigroup’s CitiFinancial subsidiary. According to a CitiFinancial spokesperson, CitiFinancial is not sure whether the data was lost, or stolen (they are treating it as lost), while en route to Experian Information Systems, a credit reporting agency. What they do know is that it was picked up, as scheduled, by UPS, but the UPS driver failed to scan in the package, and three weeks later it turned up missing.

Said Kevin Kessinger, Executive Vice President for Citigroup’s Global Consumer Group, “We deeply regret this happened.”

Although perhaps not quite as much as their customers.

  1. So. How does one find out whether or not one is counted among the unfortunate citicorp customers whose information has gone missing?
