Many of you may already have heard that this week a woman received the first face transplant in history. However, this is one of those “rest of the story” stories, and were it not for that modern miracle known as the Internet, I wouldn’t be able to bring you that rest of the story. Because you see, as is often the case here in the United States, the press engine outside of the United States has lots of interesting information which never makes it here.

In the case in point, an unidentified woman in France suffered a dog mauling during which she lost her chin, her lips, and part of her nose.

During the four-hour procedure, the nose, lips and chin of a donor who had been declared brain dead were transplanted to the woman.

After being unconscious for 24 hours total, during which the procedure took place, the French woman woke up and said, it is reported, “Merci” (”thank you”).

That much most of the world knows.

However, according to reports on the BBC website, this is the rest of the story:

The dog mauling occurred while the woman was unconscious.

From an overdose which she took in an effort to commit suicide.

The dog who “mauled” her was her own family dog, who was attempting to wake her up. Which worked.

The dog was put down, over family objections.

Now, I ask you, what is wrong with this picture?

  3. If the family wiahed to have the life of the dog to continue, who was responsible for the dog’s death?
And why did this decision take presedence over the wishes of the family?

  4. They should have transplanted the dog’s face onto her.

  5. Typical press release by the US major networks. They try to attract people’s attention, and then present a sanitized, politically correct slanted report. One thing the major networks can’t seem to figure out - reality is never politically correct.

  6. Dog’s don’t naturally eat people. Something isn’t right with this story. Even in starvation stories dogs would rather die than eat humans or other dogs. Face lady isn’t telling the real story. My guess: she was so drugged out she did it to herself.
