T-Mobile has announced the debut of their unlimited wifi phone (think VOIP) service, called “Hotspot @Home”. For only $20.00 per month, you can make unlimited Hotspot@Home calls from, well, your Hotspot at home, as well as from any Tmobile Hotspot location. T-Mobile is also selling two new handsets designed to work seamlessly with the service through their The Only Phone You Need website.

The new Tmobile Dash phone is the newest device in the combined cellphone and PDA market. With built -in wifi and bluetooth as well as being a GSM phone, the T-mobile Dash allows you maximum connectivity in a mimimum-sized package.

Nokia has launched a new wireless protocol called “Wibree”. Wibree is similar to Bluetooth in that it allows wireless communication (not “wifi”, which specifically refers to wireless internet communications) between two devices. However unlike Bluetooth, Wibree is designed for and aimed at smaller applications which require low power, such as watches, and chips in sports monitors such as pedometers. In fact, despite a lot of media coverage comparing Wibree to Bluetooth, Wibree is not only not intended to replace or compete with Bluetooth, Wibree is intended as an adjunct to Bluetooth.

Remote XT is a new service which causes a stolen cell phone to emit a loud scream noise, and otherwise completely disables the cell phone. It also puts a text message on the screen which says “this phone is stolen”. The only way to stop the screaming noise is to remove the battery, at which point, of course, the stolen phone is completely useless.

The new T-Mobile MyFaves (as in “My Favorites”) service allows you to have unlimited calls with any 5 numbers you designate – get this – even if they are not on the Tmobile network. That’s pretty cool. Similar to the My Circle plan from Alltel, the TMobile MyFaves plan is much less expensive.

A new line of Bluetooth enabled watches from both Fossil and Sony Ericsson are hitting the stores within the next few weeks. Both the Sony Ericsson Vanguard MBW-100 and the Fossil Caller ID FX6001 are able to detect and display data from your cell phone, alerting you to an incoming call via vibration, displaying the caller i.d. of the call, and allowing you to reject or accept the call. Shades of Dick Tracy!
