If you have been trying to get to Facebook today, Thanksgiving Day, 2019, and are unable to, it’s not you. Facebook is completely down. And Instagram is down. Both through the app, and via the web. Catastrophic failure for both sites.
As millions in the U.S. prepare to observe Thanksgiving, perhaps this is what we should be thankful for – a not-so-subtle nudge to spend more time interacting face-to-face with friends and family, instead of with our phones.
Of course, it’s not just users in the United States who are experiencing issues. According to WPIX, it’s a global outage with, for example, the reports of Insta being down coming from places such as London and Brazil.
The site DownDetector confirms this, showing outages across not only the U.S., but South America, the European Union, and other regions.

So far there has been no word from Facebook as to what the issue is. And as it is effecting Instagram as well our bet is that it’s server related, although whether it’s an unfortunate internal oopsie or a malicious external factor, we can only guess.
We’ll keep this article updated as we learn more. In the meantime, please let us know if you are able to reach Facebook or Instagram, and where you are located.
And, oh yeah, happy Thanksgiving!
