“Is waterboarding torture?” is a question that many are asking these days. Now a live waterboard video has hit the Internet, purposely put on the worldwide web in order to allow people to witness someone being waterboarded, and to decide for themselves.
It all started when Michael Mukasey, President Bush’ nominee for Attorney General, refused during confirmation hearings to commit as to whether waterboarding is torture or not. While many have vouched that it is not U.S. policy to waterboard as part of the intelligence discovery process with ‘enemy’ prisoners, the question still became something of a litmus test for Michael Mukasey.
Many were not even familiar with waterboarding until the hearings, but waterboarding, a form of medieval torture – a water torture – used as early as the Spanish Inquisition – is alive and used today.
In an effort to increase public awareness and understanding of waterboarding, given its rise in the press, journalist Kai Larson arranged to have himself waterboarded, and to have the waterboarding videotaped.
The result is this live video. Be warned, it’s graphic. After watching it, let us know – how did being able to see this video online affect you? Did it make up – or change – your mind for you?

Its definitely torture, no doubt whatsoever. The USA has come a long way in 400 years, NOT……. The Spanish inquisition and religion used the same tactics
Keith Olbermann of MSNBC presented a very convincing and emotional commentary last night on waterboarding and its effects on the American “moral high ground” that has been sacrificed by the current White House occupants:
I am a member of a community in which some participants choose to be “tortured” for their own and their “captors” pleasure. The reason Mr. Larsen was able to hold out as long as he did in this video is because he consented to the “torture” and because he knew with certainty that his “captors” would not harm him.
While the video offers an excellent representation of what water boarding looks like, because of this, it cannot capture the absolute terror to which its victims are subjected. Any activity of this sort, when engaged in by someone who has not consented to the activity, is torture.
Confessions obtained through this method (or any other method of torture, sleep deprivation, etc.) should not be admissible for any purpose and any information obtained through this methodology should be considered poison fruit.
Any member of our government that participates or supports in any “interrogation” method of this sort should be removed from office and prosecuted for assault. Mr. Mukasey should NEVER be confirmed as Attorney General given his equivocating on this subject.
Use of methods like this make the United States participants in and supporters of terrorist. It must stop now.
