Retail giant Walmart is now offering streaming video rentals right from its website. Having acquired the VUDU streaming video service last year, Walmart is now mainstreaming (pun intended) its streaming service by making it available front and center on the Walmart.com site.
While some consider this a direct challenge to Netflix, and their streaming service, Walmart is charging $3.99 per video streamed, while Netflix’ streaming-only service is $7.99 per month, with no limit to the number of videos you can stream.
Eduardo Castro-Wright, Vice Chairman of Walmart said, back when Walmart acquired VUDO last year, that
“The real winner here is the customer. Combining VUDU’s unique digital technology and service with Walmart’s retail expertise and scale will provide customers with unprecedented access to home entertainment options as they migrate to a digital environment.”
