This free app provides a daily check-in service for seniors and shut-ins, and alerts their emergency contacts if they don’t respond within a certain period of time. Ever since the pandemic started the need for check-in apps for seniors living alone, as well as for shut-ins, has been amplified, and Snug is just about the perfect free check-in app for seniors and others.

Snug will text your emergency contacts if you don’t check in within ten minutes of receiving the daily check-in reminder from the app, and one of the things that we love about this daily check-in service is that it is one of the only such services that texts you the check-in! Nearly all the others call you, which is great if you want to be called, but not so great if you don’t, or if you may not always be in a place where you can take a call. This way you can discretely check in through the app from wherever you happen to be, and nobody will be the wiser.

How the Snug Daily Check-in App for Seniors and Shut-Ins Works

This app is simple and straight-forward, which is part of its appeal, especially for those seniors who may be “technology challenged”. You simply set, within the app, the time that you want your check-in text message to be sent, and then every day at that time a text message will be sent.

When you either tap the text message notification, or open the app, you see this screen, with a nice big check-in button, and a second bright blue “Call for Help” button at the bottom – about as senior-friendly as you can get!

The Snug Daily Check-in Service App Offers a Lot but Wait – There’s More!

In addition to being the first and perhaps only truly free daily check-in app for those who are living alone (senior or otherwise), Snug offers an additional paid service that you can layer on top of your free service, which is called the Snug Dispatch Plan.

As Snug explains, with the Snug Dispatch Plan, if you miss your check-in “a Snug dispatcher will call your cell phone and ask if you are alright. If you do not pick up, they will leave a voicemail with a callback number. They will then proceed to call every one of your contacts, in order. If you have not checked-in by 8:15 and the dispatcher does not have confirmation that you are okay, or that one of your emergency contacts will check on you, they will dispatch a wellness check to your last known location.”

In addition, with the Dispatch plan you can have up to 3 check-ins per day, instead of the one that comes with the free plan, and you can provide notes to the dispatcher, such as letting them know of any pets that are in the house. Finally, if you have location data enabled for the Snug app, and a check-in is missed, the Snug dispatcher will give your last known location to your emergency contacts or to the local emergency services dispatcher. (Snug says that “we don’t keep a history of locations, only the most recent one for sharing with emergency contacts and/or dispatchers in the event of a missed check-in. Access to that information is restricted to Snug employees on a need to know basis, only those employees have access to that information.” You know that’s important to us, heck we’re the one who told you how to make your iPhone nearly impossible to track!)

Clearly the Dispatch plan is a whole lot of peace of mind, and it’s only $9.99 a month, or $99.00 a year. But even with the free plan, knowing that your emergency contacts will be notified if you don’t respond is great peace of mind (they are notified by text message with the free plan, unlike by phone with the Dispatch plan). The same is true if you are an emergency contact: knowing that if your older parent or shut-in family member or friend doesn’t respond you’ll be notified can provide a great deal of relief from the stress of worrying that something might happen to them and you won’t know.

One thing that’s good to know is that in order to set someone as your emergency contact, they must already be in your contacts on your phone, and before they can be listed as an emergency contact Snug will send them a text message confirming that they agree to be an emergency contact (which is as it should be).

The Snug service is only available as an app on iPhone or Android, in part because it relies on mobile app technology to message you for your daily check-in and for you to in turn check in through the app, and in part because it leverages being able to reach out to your emergency contacts by text message (free plan) or phone (paid Dispatch plan), and let them know your last location if need be.
