The White House Gets a Twitter Account, Facebook Page, and MySpace Space

Proving that it really wants to be the hip Internet administration, the White House now has a Twitter account, a Facebook page, and a MySpace Page.

Dubbing itself “White House 2.0”, the White House explains in a statement that “In the President’s last Weekly Address, he called on government to “recognize that we cannot meet the challenges of today with old habits and stale thinking.” He added that “we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative,” and pledged to “reach beyond the halls of government” to engage the public.”

Apparently creating a White House twitter account, White House Facebook page, and White House MySpace page are the way to reform our governement so that it is more efficient.

But are people ready for our elected officials to be so reachable? Are we ready for them to not be any different from (or, dare we say it, in some ways better than) us?

Ready or not, here they are. And judging by the numbers of followers and subscribers that the White House Twitter, Facebook and MySpace accounts already have, at least some of us are ready.

The White House Twitter account already has more than 41,000 followers, and the White House Facebook account and White House MySpace account each have over 171,000 friends.

Still, there is an underlying sense of something just not being quite right about it, at least for some people, on some level. As a poster on the USA Today forums observed, an advertisement on the White House MySpace page that says ‘Pimp My Profile” is “Not very Presidential.”

One also has to wonder what leaders of countries around the world are thinking when they see that our own president has adopted the latest teen fads as his own. What’s next? White House press releases in txt on ur phone?

And, as always, if you want to see the official White House website you need to go to WhiteHouse.gov (note the .gov) – under no circumstances should you ever go to WhiteHouse.com (and never ever ever let a child accidentally go there), as it’s a rampant porn site that spawns endless graphic windows faster than you can close them.

  1. I went to one of those whitehouse type porn sites once…by accident, of course, and I was absolutely astounded by how many windows they can open in so little time. I finally shut my computer off to stem the flow.
