Countless people have opened their email this week to be told that “The person described above is charged as follows” in what claims to be a traffic ticket with the “violation” of “Speed Over 55 Zone” Examples we’ve seen have supposedly come from the New York State Polic (such as from automailer.-093@nyc.gov), but it doesn’t matter where it comes from, it’s not real, and the included file is not your ticket – it’s a virus. Don’t open it!

The ticket in our sample says, in full:

New York State – Department of Motor Vehicles

Uniform Traffic Ticket

New York State Police

  2. 1st – thanks for information that is accurate and not some old email still circulating. I’m not in NY but it’s still good to know.
2nd – I’m a fan of Tim Carter’s also – he has saved me many an hour of misery trying to maintain my house.
I sure am in good company. Hold on to your hat as Irene comes our way.

  3. Thanks for the warning of ‘bogus’ traffic tickets. However the FIRST warning bell, for those with a brain, should be-How did the police dept get your email address?
BTW…I LOVE your newsletter. THANK YOU for doing all this research & stuff for us!
