Google has flat out denied the existence of a “traditional social network platform” like the “Google Me” social network rumoured to be in the works to compete with Facebook, meaning that the beta of ‘Google Me’ can’t be far off.
In quotes attributed to Google’s Director of Mobile Product Management, Hugo Barra, published today, Barra is quoted as saying “We are not working on building a traditional social network platform.”
He then went on to say, however, that “We do think ‘social’ is a key ingredient, but we think of it more broadly. We think of social as an ingredient rather than a vertical platform.”
All this is clearly Googlefuscation speak for “yeah, we’re working on it but we aren’t actually admitting it, so let’s play hide-the-social-network with semantics.”
In fact, nobody from Google has actually flatly denied that they are working on something very “Google Me”-like (although apparently it won’t be a “traditional” social network, whatever that means). Even when pressed, Google’s CEO in the UK, Matthew Brittin, simply declined to comment, without issuing any sort of denial.

While Google isn’t denying the existence of a “Google Me”, at least one of theirs is decrying the alleged name. Barra said that the name ‘Google Me’ was “awful.”

I reckon they could have built a cracker of a system on top of Google Wave. I had an invite to that, but there wasn’t anything concrete to try out on it, and nobody I knew to try it out with :-(
