A hot item at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has been the Internet toothbrush. Both the Kolibree and the Beam Brush bluetooth toothbrush are connected to the Internet, and report back on just how well you are brushing your teeth. We can only assume that the next new thing in Internet toothbrushes will be a mouthcam.

Each Internet toothbrush – both the Beam Brush and the Kolibree – report back to a smartphone app, but the bluetooth enabled toothbrushes are different from each other. The Kolibree is an electric toothbrush, whereas the Beam Brush is actually a manual toothbrush “with an embedded sensor that maps brushing behavior and sends the data to an associated AndroidTM or iPhone® App via Bluetooth®.”

Says Beam, “The Beam App allows users to connect to multiple Beam Brushes and upload brushing length and frequency data to an easy-to-read interface, so the whole family can easily compare statistics. Users also have the option to send their data to their dentist ahead of cleanings so oral care habits can be considered in treatment planning. The app displays a timer with the ability to play music for 2 minutes through the app while brushing. It will even tell you when it’s time to replace the brush head and send it to you automatically! By using the Beam Goals feature, users will achieve brushing milestones that result in real-world rewards.”

The Kolibree works much the same way, except that the Kolibree toothbrush is an electric toothbrush. However, the primary difference is that the Kolibree actually tracks the brush head’s motion while you are brushing.

Oh, there are two other important differences:

The Kolibree isn’t actually available yet, but “will be available for pre-order this summer through Kickstarter or another crowdfunding site,” and is expected to cost between $99 and $200.

The Beam Brush is already available and costs $24.99.

You can order the Beam Brush at BeamToothbrush.com.
