A massive Comcast telephone outage is affecting businesses and homes alike across the United States for the second day in a row. States coast to coast are affected, including California, Washington state, New York, Georgia, Florida and Pennsylvania, along with inland states like Colorado and Illinois. Major cities that are effected include Chicago, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Jacksonville, Denver, Houston, Atlanta, Manhattan, and Philadelphia, along with many outlying cities in those areas.

Said Comcast on their Twitter feed, earlier this morning: Outage Update: Phone services for most customers have been restored. Unfortunately, a small group continue to see issues. We are working hard to restore services to all and apologize for this inconvenience.

However, for thousands across the country that is still not the case.

Yesterday Comcast said “We realize how critical phone services are to your business and we apologize for this inconvenience. All of our available resources are actively working to restore service for our remaining customers who are being impacted by this outage.”

We’d like to take this opportunity to point out that in many parts of the country POTS (plain old telephone service) is available, and a good idea. If it is not available in your part of the country, then there still may be an alternative to Comcast, whose suckitude is legendary. Here in Colorado, where the Internet Patrol is based, we have the option of CenturyLink for both Internet and telephone service.

Unfortunately, there are many areas where Comcast is the only show in town.

And in those areas, people are at the mercy of the cloud-based Comcast telephone system.

As TeleCompetitor, notes, “But while the cloud-based approach enables these capabilities, it also magnifies the impact when something goes wrong. With traditional technology, outages generally were confined to relatively small geographic areas,” adding that “It would be fruitless and even foolhardy to seek to prevent cloud-based services, virtualization and automation or to prolong the use of less efficient decades-old technology, however, as those technology advances can bring many benefits. Instead, outages such as the 2014 PSAP outages or Comcast’s voice outage yesterday remind us that the industry shouldn’t leap into the new technologies without carefully considering the downside and how it might be prevented.”

We were first made aware of this outage when we discovered that three separate businesses – to whom we were trying to give business – were unreachable between today and yesterday. We have to assume that the net loss of business, across all businesses affected by this outage, has to be enormous, and we look forward to the class action lawsuit that we hope will come out of this. Because Comcast has deserved a comeuppance for a long time.

How about you? Have you been personally affected by this nationwide Comcast outage?

  1. Got one word: Ooma. I gave up my lousy AT&T VOIP several years ago; there was a hum in the line that AT&T could never seem to fix. I happened to read a Consumer Reports article that said that people who had Ooma were insanely happy with it. OK, I thought, I’ll buy it at Costco and if I hate it, I can return it. I loved it from the start – the sound was super clear, and you can’t beat the price. After the $100-150 for the gadget that hooks into your router, basic service is free (plus taxes) or all the bells and whistles for $10/month (plus taxes). After paying roughly $85/month for bad phone service, $10 for great service is truly amazing. (No, I don’t work for Ooma.)
