Facebook to charge its users? Rumours are swirling that users are going to have to pay for Facebook. So is Facebook going to charge people to use it? Is Facebook charging its users as we speak? No. The rumours are false. And a Facebook pay to play scheme is very unlikely; in order for Facebook to start charging their users, they would have to come up with a premium service that offered a great deal of additional value, like maybe easy-to-understand privacy settings, not defaulting new apps to ‘permitted’, and not playing fast and loose with user privacy.

The “Facebook charging users” rumour appears to have started (this time) with a chain email that is also showing up on Facebook walls, and that proclaims that:

FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO…IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PASS.

You may get some other variation of this, but regardless of the version, it is a hoax – do not fall for it.
