It’s been a long time in coming, but the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which is responsible for creation, approval, and overseeing of Internet domains (primarily the TLD space) has set in motion the final approval of the .XXX domain (also being referred to, at least in email, as the “dot-ex-ex-ex” domain, so as to avoid spam filters). Only adult entertainment industry sites may use .XXX domains, and so it isn’t enough to just have an adult-themed site – you must also demonstrate during the adult domain application process that you are actually in the adult entertainment business.

ICANN first approved the .XXX domain back in 2005; then ICANN reversed its decision in 2007. However, this week’s approval is final.

That said, there is a serious backlash, and even a boycott effort, being lead by the Free Speech Coalition (which, make no mistake, is a one-issue organization – they represent the adult entertainment industry, and thus are only about ‘free speech’ for porn purveyors – that is their constituency, and for whom they lobby). This may seem, at first blush, a little backwards – after all, being able to freely publish adult-themed material on the Internet is all about free speech.

But that’s just the point, says the Free Speech Coalition. By creating a special domain for the adult entertainment industry, goes their reasoning, you are in effect creating an XXX ghetto, to which adult-themed sites will be relegated. In fact, with such a unique domain, porn sites could be – oh horrors – filtered.

Of course, the fact that nobody is being required to use the .XXX domain – and that 230,000 .XXX domains have already been pre-registered, seems to have escaped their notice.

Said the Free Speech Coalition’s Executive Director, Diane Duke, “We will continue to organize the industry in voicing its opposition to this dangerous and costly TLD through all avenues available to us…” saying elsewhere that the .XXX domain has an “utter lack of support from within the online, adult industry.”

Which is interesting, when you consider those 230,000 XXX domains that have been pre-registered.

What is also interesting is that Ms. Duke – the Executive Director of a major lobbying organization, has no biono background information – to be found ANYWHERE online. How is it that someone who is the mouthpiece for such an vocal, ever-present online industry has no apparent credentials? Is she an attorney (if she is, she is certainly not a member of the bar of California, in which the FSC is headquartered)? A well-educated executive? A former porn star? d) All of the above? Nobody seems to know.

In any event, please let us know how you feel about the approval of the .XXX domain!

  1. We ask the same question about Diana Duke in the industry. She often refers to Stuart Lawley of the ICM Registry (.XXX) as an Outsider… but who is she; and when did the millions of Adult Webmasters appoint her to speak for the industry with such foul and distasteful language. The spokesperson we would choose would be the best of best — not a biggot who can only use words like “Bullshit”. The industry should call for her resignation and a serious look into the non-profit status of the poorly named Free Speech Coalition.
