If they are to be believed, Tumbledown Trails golf course was trying to do the right thing when they offered a special 9/11 discount to their golf course in Verona, Wisconsin. But, they clearly went about it in the wrong way, and the wrath they incurred has apparenty led to their taking their Facebook page down.

It all started when Tumbledown Trails golf course ran an ad offering a special 9/11 discount on a round of golf. 9 holes for $9.11, with the discount good only on 9/11.

Quickly the collective ire of people around the country who saw this as a blatant effrontery went from groundswell to fever pitch, with so many people storming Tumbledown Trails’ Facebook page (which is linked from their website) that, it appears at the time of this writing, that they have had to take their Facebook page down

Before their Facebook page disappeared, Tumbledown Trails tried to explain their actions.

“We would first like to apologize to everyone that we have upset or feels we have disrespected in any way. By no means did we mean to do this,” they wrote on their Facebook page. “Here is what we will do this Wednesday 9-11; we will still let all that have tee times booked play for the previous rates we posted. Then for all other golf that day we would like to donate the $ difference between our normal rate and the previous price for the day to the 9/11 Memorial. We hope that everyone will now see this as a positive as we really meant it to be. Again we do sincerely apologize for offending anyone & hope that you do accept our sincere apology.

Thank you”

As you can see by the first comment above, people weren’t buying it.

In fact, Tumbledown later posted the following update:

“Please stay tuned to see if we will open on Weds 9/11. We are now worried about what people will do/say to our staff and do not want anything to happen or get out of control.”

According to reports, the golf course started receiving telephoned death threats.

Said Mark Watts, an owner at Tumbledown, “If anybody knows our family, you know we support the military, local police, fire department and emergency crews. Everything we do is based on family and country.”

But apparently not enough people knew their family, as their Facebook page is now gone, and at least a couple of news outlets are reporting that Tumbledown is debating shutting down (although we can find nothing to corroborate that story).
