Wondering how to opt-out of LinkedIn Sponsored Inmail (which we here refer to as LinkedIn spam)? When you get unwanted LinkedIn InMail email from an individual, you can hit “report as spam” on it. But when you get a sponsored message, you don’t have that option (because, of course, LinkedIn has sold that access to your LinkedIn inbox to whomever sent you that message).

As LinkedIn explains, “LinkedIn Sponsored InMails are messages from our partners with informational or promotional content that is part of a marketing or hiring campaign. These Sponsored InMails are sent to LinkedIn users based on non-personal information, such as the title of your current position, your primary industry, or your region, and are not from individual recruiters using LinkedIn. Your name and e-mail address will not be disclosed to LinkedIn’s marketing partners.”

In fact, if you click on a LinkedIn Sponsored Email from within your LinkedIn inbox, it doesn’t even take you to the normal mail interface, it takes you to a brand new page, featuring only the Sponsored InMail.

If you were to go down waaaaaaay to the very bottom of that page, you might notice this text:

Why did I receive this message? This Sponsored InMail was sent to you based on non-personal information, such as your function, your primary industry, or your region. Per our privacy policy, your name and e-mail address have not been disclosed. Edit your Sponsored InMail contact settings.

If you opt in to share your information with the advertiser, this information will be subject to the advertiser’s privacy policy. {Yikes!}

So, assuming that you do not want to receive these, here’s how to opt out of LinkedIn Sponsored InMails.

Below we have provided a link – when you click on it, it will first prompt you to log in to your LinkedIn account. After you do so, you will be presented with this pop-up window:

As you can see, LinkedIn has helpfully pre-checked the following for you:

LinkedIn’s marketing partners may send you informational and promotional messages.

LinkedIn’s hiring campaign partners may send you informational and promotional messages.

So, uncheck those two things.

And click on “Save changes”.

All done!
