How is the iPhone 4S Different from the iPhone 4? Here’s How

The Internet Patrol - Patrolling the Internet for You

As people lined up today to buy the brand new iPhone 4S, some people are wondering “Why?” Is it just for Siri, the “Personal Assistant” software (which Android users have had for ages with the “Genius Button”)? What is different about the iPhone 4S as compared to the iPhone 4 – after all, the number is the same. Is the iPhone 4S better than the iPhone 4? Should I upgrade to an iPhone 4S (or, if I don’t already have an iPhone, should I get an iPhone 4S?) Here’s what’s different, and what’s new.

So here’s the deal – the iPhone 4S has essentially three main advantages over the iPhone 4: it has a faster processor, it has a better camera, and it has Siri, the voice-activated, voice-controlled “personal assistant’.

Let’s start with the last item first. According to Apple, Siri “lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Siri is so easy to use and does so much, you’ll keep finding more and more ways to use it.”

Again, Android users have had this feature for ages. But iPhone users haven’t. So, if this turns you on, then you may want to queue up to get yourself an iPhone 4S. If it doesn’t matter to you, read on and see if the other two main new features do it for you.

Faster processor: The iPhone 4S has a dual-core A5 chip – get that, a dual-core processor. This makes it one fast phone. But the iPhone isn’t the only dual-core processor phone (sources say that the upcoming Droid Razr dual-core speed-tested faster than the iPhone 4S) – and more to the point, just how fast do you need your phone to be? Ponder. So if you are annoyed at the sluggish pace of your current iPhone, maybe the 4S is for you.

Finally, the last big change: the camera. Ah, the camera. Here, we have to admit, would be the thing that does it for us – if we were an iPhone shop. We’re not – we are an Android shop (but otherwise a full Mac shop, we are equal opportunity electronics users) – but it was an 8MP camera that lead to our last Android upgrade. And, if quality of phone-taken photos is important to you, then this may be the thing that does it for you, as well. Because the new iPhone 4S features a gorgeous, 8MP camera, and with that zippy processor, it takes beautiful photos at a snappy pace, and with a snazzy new light sensor.

So there you have it – the reasons to buy – or not to buy – the new iPhone 4S.
