If Weird Al and Alanis Morissette had a love child, the result would be Karen Kilgariff.

If Weird Al and Alanis Morissette had a love child, the result would be Karen Kilgariff. With lyrics at once hysterical and lacerating, such as the lyrics (below) to “Look at Your Phone” and “Password”, Kilgariff turns her laser focus on contemporary golden idols such as smartphones, and daily annoyances such as forgetting your password.

With an impressive background in comedy writing (she was head writer for both The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Rosie Show), it’s not surprising that her lyrics veer towards biting humor. Other songs on Kilgariff’s recently released digital album, Live at the Bootleg, include “I Want to Win”, “Business Situation”, “Jesus Walks”, and “Drink My Way Through Christmas”.

But it is the focus on technology which, of course, endears her to our hearts. How can you not love a song that includes the lines “What are you gonna do when the grid goes down?” and “Ooh you have to check it, You could have some messages from someone far away, Or someone with something to say”?

Or another song that includes “I forgot my password again, I have no idea what it could have been, I tried my old dog’s name, and my birth date, I tried 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.”

Here are the lyrics to those two songs. But of course, the best thing is to listen to Kilgariff sing them herself, which you can do on her Live at the Bootleg album at Amazon. It’s also available through iTunes.

Look at Your Phone
Karen Kilgariff “Live at the Bootleg”

If there’s a moment of silence, look at your phone.
And if you don’t know what to say, look at your phone
There’s no point looking around
everyone’s looking down
just look at your phone
look at your phone
look at your phone

What are you gonna do when the grid goes down?
Do you have a plan for yourself when the grid goes down?
Will you be all alone
just staring at that cold dead phone
in an apartmet in West Covena?

Ooh you have to check it
you could have some messages from someone far away
or someone with something to say.
If there’s a moment of silence look at your phone.
