Fans of the performance of Michael Jacksons’s Thriller by the inmates of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the Phillipines will be delighted to hear that their favorite dancers are back. Dancing to the song “Gangnam Style,” by Internet sensation and Korean rapper, Psy, 1,000 inmates performed for a wildly cheering audience. For those of you who have been exploring some desolate jungle, or have been sequestered for jury duty for the last eight weeks, here is the original Gangnam Style video:
“Gangnam Style” is slang in Korea, referring to the Gangnam district of Seoul which is known for its affluence, and extravagant lifestyle. Psy has said that the song is meant to be a commentary on materialism, but it has become best known for its video’s bright imagery and Psy’s now trademark dance moves. The video quickly went viral, with 348,671,155 views on YouTube as of the time of this writing. It has spawned a slew of parodies, and was even the focus of a recent Saturday Night Live skit:
It wasn’t too long before the dancing inmates of Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center decided to prove, once again, their ability to flawlessly dance in sync is second to none. Taking place in the same prison yard that was the stage to their famous Thriller recreation, the inmates all donned giant “P”s (for Psy) on their backs. Even though this performance was amidst a rain storm, the crew enthusiastically performed Psy’s dance routine with as much precision as they performed the Thriller dance. They even had a Psy impersonator, complete with sunglasses. Now we’re just waiting for them to do a Lady Gaga song!
