If you received the email from Amazon telling you that Audible is now included in your Amazon Music Unlimited account, you may be confused as to what that really means. Does it mean that you can cancel your Audible account payment, and only pay for Amazon Music Unlimited, and still maintain your Audible account without the double payment? NO, it does not mean that!

First, of course, Amazon has not only not made it hard to determine whether the fact that Audible is now included with your Amazon Music Unlimited account means that you can cancel your Audible account, or at least the payment there to.

Not only that, but their online customer service representatives have no clue (no surprise there). We first tried speaking with an Amazon CS rep because, you know, the info was coming from Amazon. At first she didn’t even know what I was talking about (not her fault, that’s Amazon’s bad). So then she asked us to send her a screenshot of the email, which we did. Then she started trying to puzzle through this conundrum, giving bad information that seemed like guesses.

So while she was doing that we went straight to Audible on our other line, and got the true and accurate information directly from Audible (as contrasted to the bad and wrong information from Amazon customer service).

Here is the text of the email from Amazon that is causing all of this confusion:

The Internet Patrol is completely free, and we don't subject you to ads or annoying video pop-ups. But it does cost us out of our pocket to keep the site going (going on 20 years now!) So your tips via CashApp, Venmo, or Paypal are VERY appreciated! Receipts will come from ISIPP.

Listen to one audiobook each month in the Amazon Music app. This is in addition to 100 million songs on-demand and ad-free, the highest quality streaming audio, and the most ad-free top podcasts. Your Audible membership remains unchanged. You can continue to listen to your purchased audiobooks and the Plus Catalog as well as use your Audible credits in the Audible app. Your purchased audiobooks, the Plus Catalog and your Audible credits are not available in the Amazon Music app.

Clear as mud in terms of what to do with your Audible membership, right?

The confusion comes in large part because in their infinite wisdom Amazon decided to send this email to everyone, including people who already subscribe to Audible and Audible+

Here’s the deal, straight from Audible:

If you have an Audible account and Amazon Music Unlimited, and if you cancel the payment to Audible (but don’t cancel your actual Audible account), you will be able to keep all of the audiobooks in your Audible library that you have purchased up until the date you cancel the payment to Audible. If you completely close and cancel your Audible account, you will lose access to those audiobooks which are currently in your Audible library.

AND

You will no longer be able to store future audiobooks, which you will get through Amazon Music Unlimited, at the rate of one per month. You will not have access to the full Audible catalog (such as all of the free audiobooks to which you have access if you are an Audible+ subscriber). What you will get, and what you will only/i> get, is one free audiobook a month, which will go {{{poof}}} at the end of the month, then you get to listen to a different free audiobook for the next month, and so on. There is no storing and keeping and re-listening to any of those audiobooks that you get through your Amazon Music Unlimited subscription.

We then relayed this information to the Amazon CS rep, with whom we were still chatting. After we schooled them on what we had learned from Audible, they went on to say, and we quote, “Please to be inform that, Upon checking i can see that the Amazon music unlimited is included with your Audible.”

Uh, no. Just no. No it’s not.
