A Message from Anne: My Big Bad Accident and Why You Should Wear Your Seatbelt

Share the knowledge

Yesterday I was in an accident. In fact, it was a pretty bad accident. The thing is, there was nothing I could have done to anticipate, let alone stop it.

You see, I was stopped behind a bus, and someone plowed into me from the rear, shoving my car into to the back of the bus. Fortunately, the only non-superficial injuries I sustained were a blow to my chest from the airbag. Yeah, it hurts like h*ll, but I’m not complaining, I’m d*mned lucky to be alive. And that is the point of this post.

My reason for posting this is: look at the pictures of my car. My car SAVED MY LIFE. My seatbelt SAVED MY LIFE. As I waited for the ambulance and for the paramedics, to extricate me from my car, and pretty much every 5 or 10 minutes after, even at this moment as I write this, it hits me all over again how very much worse this could have been if..if…. if I hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt… if my airbags hadn’t deployed. If I was in a less robust car.

My car was stopped. Stationary. And look what happened. Even if you trust your own driving, you never know when someone is going to plow into you from behind, pushing you into a bus.

It doesn’t matter if you are just going to the corner store. It doesn’t matter if you are just going down the block. It doesn’t matter if you car isn’t even moving!

  1. You said it. I’ve been in a few crashes (fortunately, none with any but tiny injuries) where, had it not been for my seat belt, things would have been very different. They were all in the DBA (days before airbags), so I don’t know whether things would have been better with bags.

Glad you’re okay. If you ever do a bike helmet story, I have a couple stories about them to share. (My bike helmet saved MY life.)

  2. Glad to hear you’re not seriously hurt! As a veteran of 25 years of working in an ER I totally support what you’re saying.

  3. I’m so grateful you’re okay. What a great thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
