What the Heck is a “Dead People Search Engine”? We Tell You

When we saw a Google Adsense ad on our own Internet Patrol for the “Dead people search engine” we had to investigate. Our first thought was “What company or site would pay good Adsense money to advertise a “dead people search engine”??” (Well, actually our very first thought was “WTF is that??”) At first we figured it must have been poor marketing terminology, but it turns out that the site, Sysoon.com is, in fact, a ‘dead people search engine’.

Put another way, Sysoon is a search engine dedicated to providing search in death records, along with serving up affiliate links to funeral and other death-related services.

{Ed. note: Given the subject matter, we find the name “Sysoon” to be disturbingly suggestive of SeeYaSoon.}

Sysoon works just like any other search portal, but has interesting social networking undertones. For example, we searched for deceased people named “John Kennedy”, and were told that “John Kennedy is on Sysoon.” (Er, um, really?) We were also invited to “Find more dead people named: John Kennedy | John | Kennedy.”

Blunt. To the point. And, well, kinda creepy.

As with most information curating portals, you have to sign up to actually look at the records it has turned up. In this way it is no different from, say, Classmates.com, any geneology website or, for that matter, any dating website.

Sysoon is the project of a French gentleman (at least he lives in France) named Martin Dano.

It’s still unclear what the forward-facing purpose of Sysoon is, although the site talks about identity theft as it relates to criminals assuming the identities of the deceased (which it seems to enable as much as it prevents).

The site is still not fully populated (er, so to speak), and is still a work in progress, including its “comprehensive human-edited Funeral indrusty (sic) directory.”

  1. I was just checking to see if it was some type of hidden scam website. Find a grave and memorial websites are very common and extremely helpful to those of us that are researching our family trees.

  2. Keep patrolling. Combine the “gentleman’s” name with “copyright” or “copyright infringement” or “findagrave” and do a thorough search.
