Here’s a pretty nifty website if you’re curious about from where those telephone calls are really originating. It’s called Fone Finder.

The way that Fone Finder works is that you can enter any telephone number, anywhere in the world (if you are entering a number outside the United States you must include the country code), and it will return information telling you where, geographically speaking, that telephone number is located.

It even works for cell phone numbers, because, of course, the cell phone companies get their exchanges allocated locally as well. Of course, this doesn’t tell you where the phone itself is physically located, so in the case of a cell phone it lets you know where the cell phone number was originally acquired and assigned. Still pretty nifty, and potentially useful.

And, in the case of large companies, who have their own blocks of numbers, the lookup can actually tell you to whom the number is assigned. For example, looking up an eFax telephone number starting with area code 650, and following with exchange (the first three digits of a seven-number telephone number) 323 revealed that the exchange 323 was allocated to Focal Communications, through whom, who knew? eFax actually gets their connectivity.

Anyways, you can have fun playing with Fone Finder here
