Anti-virus leader Trend Micro has announced that they are offering a free virus and spam checker for mobile phones.

With more and more people carrying an almost dizzying array of increasingly sophisticated “Smart Phones”, many analysts see cell phones as the next frontier for virus writers. And of course SMS spam is already on the rise.

Dubbed “Mobile Security”, Trend Micro says that the product “provides protection against emerging threats via a compact yet sophisticated scan engine that helps detect and block malicious code.”

According to the Trend Micro site, Mobile Security provides real time virus scanning, approved and blocked senders lists for SMS messaging, the ability to block numberless SMS messages, and rapid virus pattern updating.

It is already available for the Microsoft Windows Mobile for Smartphone 2003 operating system, and support for other systems, including Microsoftâ„¢ Windows Mobileâ„¢ 2003 PocketPC - Phone Edition, Microsoftâ„¢ Windows Mobileâ„¢ 2003 Second Edition, and Symbian OS v7.0 is expected to be available next month.

The product will be available to users for free through June of 2005 (no word what happens then).
