I recently posted on Twitter that I had the secret to knowing if somebody is following you or not on Twitter. I had so many people ask me about it that I’m going to reveal the secret now.
First, let me say two things:
1. What I’m talking about is being able to tell if a particular person is following you or not. This is not the same as knowing when somebody stops following you. You can track this by one of a couple of different services, each with varying levels of effectiveness. If that is the sort of information you are looking for, check out Twitterless or Qwitter.
2. This is not actually a secret. In fact, it’s plain common sense, but it’s one of those things that you overlook because it’s right under your nose all the time.
Ok, ready? Here is the ‘secret’ to knowing whether someone is following you on Twitter:

Go to their profile page – for example my Twitter profile page is at http://www.Twitter.com/AnnePMitchell.
Now look about half-way down the right side of the page, just above all the little thumbnails of the people that person is following on Twitter. You’ll see the word “Actions”, some other lines, and then those thumbnails of the folks they are following.
Using me as an example, here is how it looks if I am not following you:
And here is how it looks if I am following you:
Do you see the difference?
If I am following you, you can “message” me and “nudge” me, as well as “block” me (but please don’t do that!)
But if I am not following you, you can’t message or nudge me.
Now, before you get upset or offended if you discover that I am not following you – personally I follow very few people directly – but I keep up with many many more people on Twitter, and I always respond to personal message on Twitter. To learn how I do all that, read this.
