The Dreaded “Time Machine has Completed a Verification of Your backups. To Improve Reliability, Time Machine Must Create a New Backup for You” Message and Why You Are Seeing It

Got the dreaded “Time machine has completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you” message? Frustrating as all get out, isn’t it? (Especially if you have gigs and gigs of data to (re)backup.) Here’s why it’s happening.

First, here’s what Apple has to say about it:

“Apple has identified an issue on some Time Capsule systems that could potentially make previous backups unavailable. The Time Capsule Backup Update improves reliability of affected Mac OS X v10.6 systems by creating a new backup.”

Gee, thanks. How about giving us a warning and a choice before doing that to us?

(Note that this is not unlike the lovely known issue with Time Machine that happens when you get your Mac logic board replaced…which Apple will happily do without first checking with you, or telling you that you will be unable to use your last Time Machine backup (even though they will tell you to be sure to make one), so you will need to start a whole new Time Machine backup anew once you get your Mac, with its new logic board, back…and heaven help you if your disk gets wiped while they are replacing the logic board. But we digress…)

So what if you get this message and it’s not as a result of installing the new and improved Time Capsule Backup Update, or not even running OS X 10.6?

In that case the odds are very good that something in your current Time Machine backup files (the one that Time Machine just verified and found wanting) was corrupted.

And in either case, you really have no choice but to submit to the whole new backup again.

The extra rub, however, is that recently there has been a rash of people who are suddenly having this happen, and repeatedly..some as frequently as weekly.

According to This Time Machine resource “This appears only on Snow Leopard, and started with the Time Capsule Backup Update 1.0 in mid-May of 2010.  It also seems to have been included in the 10.6.3 v1.1 update and 10.6.4.”

So, what can you do about it? Grin and bear it, it seems, until Apple fixes it.

One thing you can do to make the backup take less time is to connect your machine to your Time Capsule or other backup drive via Ethernet for the duration of the initial backup.

  1. I start this procedure, and after 2 hours I logged to my archive on Time Machine, and I can see.. nothing.
There is no previous archive than last one.
Where could I find previous version of files??
