Displaced Hurricane Katrina victims may file for a special new zip code, and may do so online, announced the United States Postal Service (USPS) today.

For example, many of Hurricane Katrina’s displaced are being housed at the Houston Astrodome, and the USPS has assigned the special zip code of 77230 to that facility meaning, at least in theory, that an evacuee staying at the Houston Astrodome can now receive mail there, addressed to “First Name Last Name, Houston Astrodome, 77230″.

According to the postal service, they are in the process of setting up additional special zip codes for additional evacuee sites.

Said a USPS spokesperson, “The Postal Service is asking every American unable to receive delivery at their permanent address to file a Change of Address. There are a number of ways to do this, but the quickest and easiest way is electronically.”

Hurricane Katrina victims (and others, of course) can file a change of address online at http://www.usps.com/.

Those without access to the Internet can also file a change of address by telephone at 1-800-ASK-USPS, or at any local post office.
