“Don’t leave home without one.” Remember those American Express commercials? They now apply equally to Roborior, the house-sitting mini-robot on wheels, little brother to four-legged house-sitting robot Banryu. Roborior and Banryu are both brought to you by Japanese robot maker Tmsuk Co., and will surveil the inside of your house while you are out. But where Banryu has an $18,000 USD price tag, Roborior, produced in collaboration with Sony, will only set you back $2,600. Shaped more than anything like C3PO’s head (if C3PO wore Princess Leia’s earmuff hairdo), Roborior is equipped with infrared sensors, a digital camera, and a video phone. If Roborior’s sensors are tripped, Roborior will call your cell phone, and send you video images of what’s going on inside your house! Sweet! And not only is Roborior a security buddy, but he has a sense of style, too. Glowing purple, blue, and orange, the press has said that “Roborior can function as interior decor” as well. Whee! And he’s no bigger than a breadbox! Available in limited supplies in department stores, Roborior has yet to be exported outside of Japan.
