what happens if one inadvertently does open such virus-laden spam?
No virus protection can stop a new virus immediately. It takes time for the virus to be identified, dissected, and to update the anti-virus software. Never assume that your anti-virus software will stop threats - it is a backup protection to the first line of defense: think before you click!

nothing if virus definitions are up to date with a reliable type virus scanner.
but if you had a system that was previously compromised. by a security disabling virus, trojin, rootkit. then you would get infected.

if your definitions were not up to date you would get infected.

if your av scanner is one that is weak to certain infections that you would get nailed.

nortons no longer at the top of av scanners for security or resistance to malware.

you would be very wise not to experiment with any virus or email based threat.

Hi there, Thanx for the warning. You appear to contribute valuably to Internet safety. However, what I do not understand is, in view of having up to date Norton Internet Securuty sotware installed, what happens if one inadvertantly does open such virus-laden spam? I am reluctant to experiment, hence the enquiry.
With thankful anticipation and kindest regards,
Andrew.
