Email claiming to be a CNN newsflash with the headline “Osama Bin Laden Discovered Dead” is making the rounds.

This isn’t the first time that nasty stuff has come in the name of Osama, but this one claiming to be from CNN looks quite realisitic.

The body of the spam says:

“Hello,

Osama Bin Ladin was found hanged by two CNN journalists early Monday evening. As evidence they took several photos, some of which we have included here. As yet, this information has not hit the headlines due to Bush wanting confirmation of his identity but the journalists have released some early photos over the internet which can be found attached.

  1. Hi there, Thanx for the warning. You appear to contribute valuably to Internet safety. However, what I do not understand is, in view of having up to date Norton Internet Securuty sotware installed, what happens if one inadvertantly does open such virus-laden spam? I am reluctant to experiment, hence the enquiry.
With thankful anticipation and kindest regards,
    Andrew.

nothing if virus definitions are up to date with a reliable type virus scanner.
but if you had a system that was previously compromised. by a security disabling virus, trojin, rootkit. then you would get infected.

if your definitions were not up to date you would get infected.

if your av scanner is one that is weak to certain infections that you would get nailed.

nortons no longer at the top of av scanners for security or resistance to malware.

you would be very wise not to experiment with any virus or email based threat.
