The ROKR phone by Motorola is the underlying hardware for the forthcoming iPod phone, or iTunes phone, according to sources claiming to be in the know. They also indicate that the big announcement which Apple will be making next week will indeed be the introduction of that ROKR based iPod phone. It has been known for some time that Apple will be unveiling an iPod phone, or that Motorola and carrier would be announcing an iTunes phone, depending on how you look at it, and what you choose to call it. But what has been largely unknown is when, and what it would look like.

Most sources now confirm that the ROKR line of phones is in fact the phone line which will be carrying the iTunes brand. Indeed, there are now pictures surfacing showing a ROKR E1, which is essentially a rebranded Motorola e790, displaying an iTunes interface on its screen.

The Motorola ROKR E1 (iTunes phone) offers tri-band GSM, GPRS, and 176×220 pixel screen and a 0.3 megapixel camera. It comes with Bluetooth and Java, and purports to give 7 hours of talk and 10 days of standby on a single charge.

And, of course, all those tunes.

It even purports to sport the iPod’s scroll wheel.

If all of the rumours and insider confirmations are true, it should be available through Cingular sometime…soon.

In the meantime, you can entertain yourself at sites which are displaying what purport to be leaked images of the new iTunes phone.
