Massive Sidekick Network Outage Hits United States   - 1,042 Views, 1 Comment

Summary: Users of the T-Mobile Sidekick have been without network coverage for as long as two days, with no relief in sight. Complaints started pouring into the Internet Patrol, as users found that the network was down, and they have no access to any data services (although they can still make telephone calls and some can send text messages - the Sidekick uses a data network provided by Danger, while phone calls and SMS still go out on T-Mobile's own network).

Users of the T-Mobile Sidekick have been without network coverage for as long as two days, with no relief in sight. Complaints started pouring into the Internet Patrol, as users found that the network was down, and they have no access to any data services (although they can still make telephone calls and some can send text messages - the Sidekick uses a data network provided by Danger, while phone calls and SMS still go out on T-Mobile’s own network).

Danger was purchased by Microsoft in early 2008.

“This is bullshit,” complained on Sidekick user over the weekend. “I not only have been through 3 different sidekicks in the past month, but now my data services have been down for days… this is just ridiculous. I can’t even access my phone book contacts. After this I’m done with t-mobile. I’m selling all 3 sidekicks on ebay now, paying the 200 to cancel my contract and switching providers.”

Added another, “WOW this still happening been like 2 days n still stuck on 2 dots . . . anyone know when network gonna be restored?”

However, nobody does know. T-Mobile has acknowledged the outage, on their Sidekick user forums, saying that:

T-Mobile and Danger/Microsoft continue to urgently work to restore impacted services to Sidekick, and deliver them to our customers as quickly as possible. Following is a status update for our valued customers:

Update: We are now starting to restore services, when available you may need to log back in. We will text you your user name and password over the next couple of hours, in case you need it.

Web browsing was restored Saturday afternoon, and the teams have been working through the night since the service disruption started to enable additional functions such as IM, social networking applications and email as quickly as possible.

While we anticipate a significant portion of data services to be restored by Monday, some richer data services may lag. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your patience as we work hard with Danger/Microsoft to resolve this issue. We will continue to keep you updated as we have news to share. Thank you.

Note that they say “Update: We are now starting to restore services, when available you may need to log back in. We will text you your user name and password over the next couple of hours, in case you need it.

Are we the only one who see the danger (no pun intended) inherent in this little practice?
