Ian Usher, a British man living down under, has put his entire life up for sale on eBay. The winning bidder - and there are bidders - gets Usher’s house, the contents of his house, his car, even his job. Says Ian Usher, “On the day it is all sold and settled I intend to walk out of my front door with my wallet in one pocket and my passport in the other.”

Usher’s ALife4Sale.com website provides all of the details behind the eBay listing to buy this man’s life.

The story of Ian Usher and the sale of his life has been picked up by a few places, but we did a bit of digging because we wanted to know: would you really want his life? If it’s that great a life, why is he selling it?

As it turns out - Ian Usher recently became divorced from his wife, Laura. One can certainly speculate that either a) he owes Laura a big wad of cash, and he’s trying to raise the cash to pay her, or b) he’s been ordered to sell the house and give her the proceeds, or c) he’s been bankrupted by the divorce and needs to get out from under, or d) the memories of this old life are too painful, and he wants to walk away. Somehow we suspect that it’s probably e) some combination of all of the above.

Another interesting thing that we discovered has to do with Ian Usher’s job, which is part of the sale. The job that the winning bidder would get (if they want it - the job deal is contingent on a trial period to which Ian’s employer has agreed) is at a carpet store. While Ian Usher is a graphic designer by training, and has employed those skills at the carpet store, the job also entails menial labour - such as hauling carpet. Fun, fun. Do you really want to have to pay somebody to have a job like that? Uh, no thanks.

But perhaps the most interesting thing that we discovered is that Ian Usher already has a new life, on which he is no doubt itching to focus without the baggage of his old life.

Ian Usher, carpet hauler, graphic designer, and divorced guy trying to get rid of his old life, has reinvented and reincarnated himself as “Ian Usher, Internet Marketer and Student of the Long Form Sales Letter.” From his site BetterMovieMaking.com, Usher is hawking a course on “How To Transform Your Dull Old Video Footage Into Dazzling And Dynamic Movies Of The Highlights Of Your Life”.

So, which marketing venture will be more successful for Usher, do you think? Selling his old life, or selling a “how to make great video” course?
