I wondered how this service would be paid for as well; so I contacted Jott directly. Here is what I received. FYI - I may still try it out as it is still in the testing phase.
This is what I asked:
1) Who pays for the service? I know that it is free for me; but I also read in your website that Jott is "Beta Public". Does that mean that you are still in a testing phase? Does it also mean that when this phase is completed that I may start receiving a subscription fee?

2) If this service is supported financially by advertisers, does that mean that I will be receiving unwanted (advertising) messages either to my phone and/or email account?

This is Jott's reply:
Hi Paul,
Good questions.

Yes, we do have to pay the rent around here at some point, and we are looking at a number of methods. One way, for those who are OK with it, is to have advertising. As you know, many people these days a) have no problem with this, and b) actually prefer it. The second method will in all likelihood be some kind of subscription: still very reasonable. On the ad side, we have no intention of spamming people as that’s a sure fire way of losing customers. We’ll have to figure out how to make the advertising relevant enough and light enough in order to to hobble the product.

This is not imminent, but it’s also not a year away. Right now we are providing a huge amount of value for free while we sort out our kinks. Philosophically, we didn’t believe in making our customers pay for our training (beta), so we didn’t. But in order to continue to innovate, and pay the talent around here, we’ll need to charge at some point here.

Have no fear, we have no means of charging you right now (no credit card), so you’ll have the opportunity to opt in if you want.

Best regards,
John

I checked out the Jott website; in it I found - Q: What charges will I see when using Jott?
A: The Jott service is free during beta. However, your cellular carrier will apply their standard text messaging charges (if any) that apply to receipt of text messages from Jott, or from you sending text messages to Jott. If you Jott yourself, you can choose to only receive an email. The only charges you will see are usage of your phone minutes. You can adjust these options on the settings page.

If you choose to have the text messaging enabled, your normal carrier texting charges will apply.

Currently, text messages that Jott sends on your behalf do not incur a charge to you.

Jott also supplies a toll-free number, which I plan to use to ask some questions directly

I, too, wonder who is paying for the service; and if I would receive unwanted email/phone calls via Jott - can you help clear up this concern?

And what business model supports a free service? I guess I wonder how these email addresses will be abused.
