Internet Serves Up a Host of Next Generation Gadgets for Your Dog   - 3,118 Views,

Summary: Dog gadgets abound, including dog GPS, and an automatic feeder with a built-in webcam. You can also get dog sunglasses, a special doorbell door chime for your dog, an electronic dog day planner, and, I kid you not, a dog treadmill. Oh, and let's not forget the dog pedometer to go with that treadmill.

The old joke is that on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. But a bevy of next generation gadgets are now available online for your pooch, including some that will have you saying, instead, “On your dog, nobody knows it’s the Internet.”

These gadgets include dog GPS, and an automatic feeder with a built-in webcam. You can also get dog sunglasses, a special doorbell door chime for your dog, an electronic dog day planner, and, I kid you not, a dog treadmill. Oh, and let’s not forget the dog pedometer to go with that treadmill.

With all the talk about GPS these days, it’s only fair that Fido have his own dog GPS tracker. And that is exactly what the Global Pet Finder GPS Tracking Device for Pets is. A GPS tracking unit snaps on to your dog’s collar, and then you are able to log in to the Global Pet Finder Dog GPS website, and define perimeters past which you do not want your pet to go. If your dog strays beyond that defined boundary, you will start getting immediate notices by email or SMS, so that you can track your dog (you can of course turn this off when you take your dog with you outside of the defined area). The Global Pet Finder GPS Tracking Device for Pets is available here.

Perhaps just as interesting is the automatic dog feeder (or cat feeder) that has a built-in webcam. The ISeePet (which, unfortunately, reads “IcyPet”) is like many of the automatic dog feeders you can buy in those large chain pet shops. The difference is that embedded at just above head level in the front of the feeder is a webcam, which you can connect to your home Internet connection, to allow you to check up on your pet while they eat. You can also trigger it to create a particular sound that your pet will come to be associated with “feeding time”.

Unfortunately, the ISeePet is about $500, and very difficult to find right now.

Not so with the Pet Master Electronic Handheld Pet Guide and day planner. Available through Amazon, and under $30.00, the Pet Master planner allows you to set alarm reminders, store phone numbers, find pet-friendy motels and emergency veterinary clinics, and keep track of Fido’s shopping needs.

While the Pet Master tracks your doggies appointments when out and about, the Pet Chime dog doorbell attends to needs closer to home. The Pet Chime is a wireless doorbell unit which allows your dog to step on a paw-shaped button which activates the door chime when they want to go in or out. The chime can be set to one of two sounds - either the traditional “ding dong” of a door bell, or a dog bark sound. Now, before you pooh-pooh this as a ridiculous idea, let me tell you first that we actually trained one of our dogs to ring a bell when she wanted to go out - it took all of about five minutes for her to get the hang of it, and it was wonderful - for both her and us. Also, because the Pet Chime dog doorbell is wireless, it’s portable, which means that you can take it travelling with you.

You can get the Pet Chime here.

Now, of course while your dog is out and about, you’ll want to protect their eyes from the sun. And that’s where your Doggles come in. Yes, goggles for dogs, with 100% UV protection. Coming in a variety of stylish colours, these will keep your pooches’ precious peepers protected from the ravishing rays of the sun.

For those days when it is too rainy for your dog to run around outdoors (wearing their Doggles, of course), you may want to let your dog walk on either your treadmill, or, if your dog is a smaller breed, the Belluna treadmill for small dogs (unfortunately unfindable in the U.S. as of the time of this writing). Either way, you’ll probably want a dog pedometer to keep track of their miles walked.
