Have you ever been reading a PDF file, or a website, on your Mac, and been frustrated at the lack of a “Page down” or “Page up” key? In fact, it’s very easy to page up or page down on a Mac, but it’s not obvious how to do it. Here is how to page down on a Mac (or page up on a Mac).

First, the easiest way of all to page down on a Mac is to simply hit the space bar. Yep, that’s all there is to it!

An alternate way is th hold down the Function key (“fn”) and then press the down arrow.

To page up on a Mac, just hold down that “fn” key and then press the up arrow.

There you go! Now you can page up and down to your heart’s content on your Mac!

  1. This doesn’t work in Mail. If I wish to select months and months of old emails for archiving, I must do it manually using the shift and up or down arrow keys. I can select all mail by using page up or down by holding the shift and option keys. I still can’t find a way to select and page up one page at a time.

  2. Usually just the down arrow or arrows work but sometimes trying to scroll thru the bulletin boards or group sites Facebook this nor your other two suggestions will make the page move down!

  3. I guess I have the “pretty horid little keyboard” mentioned in the comment above, however, I have grown to like it. I’m certainly glad to hear about the page down/up ability, though. I have the wireless mouse which also works very well for scrolling up/down, except stopping it exactly where you want.
    Good info you gave!

  4. Note that the keyboard shown is the Apple Wireless keyboard, which isn’t Apple’s only (or cheapest) keyboard and is only the default bundled keyboard for the iMac models, although it is very close to being a replica of a MacBook’s keyboard. As a power-starved amputated laptop part, it’s really a pretty horrid little keyboard for routine use, and no one who cares about their keyboard actually uses one. The market for USB and Bluetooth keyboards is generally platform-agnostic, so that keyboard is essentially just Apple’s way of making sure that no one who buys an iMac lacks a keyboard.
