Now that the Impact Team hackers put the data of all 37 million Ashley Madison users online, you may be wondering how to check to see whether your email address is exposed in that data dump.

As we explain in our article about the full user list being exposed, it’s really important to keep in mind that just because an email address appears in Ashley Madison data, that does not, in and of itself, necessarily mean that the person associated with that email address actually opened an account on Ashley Madison. This is because Ashley Madison is just the type of site which leads people to use an email address that is not theirs, because they don’t want to risk it being discovered that they are playing around on their spouse. So they either use a fake email address when they sign up – or they use somebody else’s email address!

Somebody used ‘test@example.com’ as their email address on Ashley Madison

So it’s not a bad idea to check to see whether your email address is in there, but if you find the email address of someone you know (such as your spouse), keep in mind that it doesn’t necessarily mean that they were actually the one who signed their email address up.

In fact, the above example from one of the two sources that we give below for checking to see whether your email address is contained in the Ashley Madison data makes a point of explaining exactly that:

So whether you are checking for your own email address, or your spouse’s, it’s important to realize that just because your email address appears in the data doesn’t necessarily mean that anything infidelitous was going on. But then again, it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t.

The two resources currently up and available online for checking to see whether or not your email address is contained in the Ashley Madison data are ashley.cynic.al and trustify.info.

Let us know if you are someone who has never visited the site and yet has found your email address there!

  1. FYI – on the cinic.al site, they have this:

Do not use the “Trustify” search site. They are recording email address searches and spamming/extorting people.

  2. http://www dot ashleymadison dot com …

I signed up as a free member of the site 2-3 yrs. ago and browsed the site for 5-10 min.’s at that time, but that was it & I don’t see my email address listed on either checker

  3. Maybe I’m getting really old, but I could not for the life of me find a link in this article that went to the query page.
